Book Description :
The Dada movement was a visceral reaction to the slaughter of the First World War. Many artists, writers and musicians, rejected the conventions of society that caused and prolonged the war, and found refuge in satire, whimsy, and nonsense. In the words of Hans Arp:¿ |While the guns rumbled in the distance, we sang, painted, made collages and wrote poems with all our might.¿ The Dada movement began to wane during the mid-1920s, as life returned to more productive and positive pursuits, but it re-emerged during the 1950s and 1960s. and became known as Fluxus|, meaning work was in flux and flowing. A counter-cultural movement, it embraced all forms of expression, including visual art, literature, music, theater, dance, and architecture.¿ Arthur Secunda, and internationally known Euro-American artist,¿ was introduced to Dada during the late 1950s. He found the philosophy and spirit of Dada fascinating. In his words, |Dada started gnawing at my stomach in a very creative way, the idea of opening up all possibilities with words, with media, with interaction between people as a conception in art that was not just painting with a brush on canvas.¿ It could be anything.|¿ Arthur Secunda was friends with several artists and musicians who had exceptional¿ impact on Dada and Fluxus, including Ray Johnson (visual arts), John Cage (music), and Merce Cunningham (dance). Secunda's artwork also embraced several of the art forms closely associated with Dada: collage, mail art and collaborative books.¿ Secunda created 11 Dada art books between 1976 and 1990. Each book was spontaneous and involved unplanned collaboration of other artists, photographers, and writers, each adding something unexpected to the books.¿ Secunda's 11 Dada books, all essentially ephemeral when created, now¿ are very scarce.¿ They are preserved and reproduced here in this compendium.¿ ¿ These Dada art books were collected by C. Edward Wall, who wrote the introductory texts for this compendium. He is an author, editor, publisher, university library director, historian, art collector, and co-founder of the Arthur Secunda Museum at Cleary University in Michigan.- Author -Arthur Secunda
